University College School New Teaching Blocks

The University College School in Hampstead is an independent school with a history of excellence stretching ack to 1830. This project entailed the construction of a new art, design and technology block and linked modern languages block, both built in a contemporary style with high levels of natural light and ventilation.

Elementa delivered mechanical and electrical engineering design services, and energy and sustainability strategies. At the outset of the project Elementa conducted workshops with user groups and the project team in order to define the scope of work and fully understand the client’s vision for the new facilities.

We worked very closely with the design team, conducting detailed thermal modelling in order to engineer the building design, including fabric, solar shading, glazing, fenestration and ventilation strategy. The result was an almost entirely naturally ventilated building with the benefit of increased future flexibility and significant savings in construction cost.

These cost savings were made from a reduction in the slab thickness, modifications to the internal flank walls and a reduction in the need for mechanical ventilation. Features include: Part L compliant low energy scheme, natural ventilation achieved through window design/ventilation concept.
