Several cities took the lead in promoting Living Buildings and net positive energy or water development through land use incentives and stretch codes. These programs required policymakers to take a leap of faith, but what can the building community provide to ensure they are successful and replicated?This session reveals new open-source toolsets that are helping policymakers and design teams take bold action in Seattle, DC and other jurisdictions. Presenters from private firms and non-profit organizations will lead a group dialogue with participants on how to leverage public data and advocacy tools in their own communities to advance new policy.

Taking Action to Advance Social Equity in the Workplace

Businesses are embracing the need for improvements to existing equity, diversity and inclusion programs. The challenge has been to advance these important issues in a robust, systematic and holistic fashion. Corporate social responsibility frameworks such as B Corp and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) allow for a snapshot in time assessment of environmental and social performance but does not offer a clear roadmap for continuous improvement across a wide range of equity indicators. Leading businesses in the design, engineering, consulting, contracting and manufacturing sectors have adopted the JUST Program as a management tool to improve diversity at all levels of the organization, build a more inclusive corporate culture and enhance employee engagement efforts. In this panel conversation, leaders from JUST labelled businesses will discuss specific actions they have taken to advance social equity polices, programs and practices in their organizations.

DPR Construction: A Mission of Authenticity and Action to Achieve Zero Energy

Starting with their first certified Zero Energy building in Phoenix, DPR Construction’s transformative offices demonstrate an unparalleled commitment to a Living Future. These living laboratories not only showcase viable energy strategies and technologies in varied climates, they prove how existing buildings are transformed into vibrant workspaces. 

A case study of the Washington DC regional office highlights the approach and lessons learned as the project nears the end of its reporting period.  Framing this project with DPR’s first Zero Energy building in Phoenix and most recent pursuit in Sacramento, illustrates DPR’s commitment to creating replicable examples of transformation and Zero Energy.

DPR’s legacy of Zero Energy buildings include 3 certified buildings and 2 buildings currently pursuing certification. The session will discuss years of lessons learned, while illustrating how those lessons informed subsequent projects.

Resilient By Design: North Richmond’s Priority Resilience Area

California Measure AA will invest more than $25 million annually over the next twenty years in San Francisco Bay restoration to address rising tides, flooding and habitat quality together with community benefits like new jobs in restoration ecology, access to public lands and support for local economies. The Mithun HOME team is one of ten teams in the Resilient by Design Bay Area Challenge growing community-driven projects that support regional resilience. The Mithun HOME team is working with North Richmond—a historically disinvested neighborhood with concentrated poverty, health disparities and a resilient, activist spirit—to help reveal priorities for proactive planning and implementable projects that respond to resilience challenges.

A brief overview of the Bay Area Challenge provides context for a panel discussion about how affordable housing and anti-displacement strategies are integrated into design scenarios, how community wealth building was centered in the process, and how ecology can become an economic driver in areas where large-scale marsh restoration is critical to healthy habitat and habitation. Learn how the design is evolving and responds to Living Community principles and performance targets.
