Charting New Territory in Passive House: Vancouver Fire Hall No. 17

While the Passive House standard is experiencing spectacular growth across North America, over 80% of certified Passive House buildings are residential projects. Adoption of the performance based standard in the commercial sector is increasing at a slower pace, possibly due to lack of experience and precedent projects. How can Passive House chart new territory and be applied to sectors other than residential? Are the lessons learned from residential Passive House projects applicable to commercial Passive House projects?

In this session HCMA Architecture + Design and Integral Group will share their experience working collaboratively on the first North American Fire House targeting Passive House certification: Fire Hall 17 located in Vancouver, British Columbia. The presenters will share their insights on one of the most ambitious projects of North America targeting Net Zero Energy, Zero Carbon Building, LEED Gold, and Passive House certifications. Designing a post-disaster, seismic-proof fire hall is already a complex challenge. While the addition of high energy performance requirements may seem overly ambitious, it helped reevaluate the building requirements of such systems, and their users’ behaviors and needs. Through the panel discussion with an architect and a mechanical engineer, attendees will be able to have their questions answered on how sustainability targets impacted the design development of the fire hall project.
