The Arbour Wins Canadian Architect Award of Excellence

The Canadian Architect has announced its 51st Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence. Out of the 190 submissions received by Canadian Architect, seven projects received Awards of Excellence, four project received Awards of Merit, two projects received Student Awards of Excellence, and this year’s program also included one Photo Award of Excellence. Architectural firms and students responsible for design proposals that reflected elements of innovation, social and environmental sustainability and overall design excellence were selected by a jury of three. Jurors included Ted Watson, partner at MJMA, Monica Adair, co-founder and principal of Acre Architects, and David Penner, founder and principal of David Penner Architect.

Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Acton Ostry Architects were among this year’s Award of Excellence recipients for their design of The Arbour project.  A new addition to the George Brown Campus in Toronto, Ontario, the Arbour is a state-of-the-art educational facility with innovation at the forefront of its design. The 12-storey structure will revolutionize Toronto’s building landscape and become the first Tall Wood Research Institute in the country, with materials sourced nationally. A net-positive energy target has been set by George Brown College in their commitment to sustainability. The building will serve as an educational hub—housing research, teaching and learning—as well as a child care facility to accommodate the rapidly growing local community.
