UCSC Cowell Ranch Haybarn Wins ASHRAE Technology Awards Honorable Mention

University of California, Santa Cruz’ Cowell Ranch Hay Barn restoration project received an ASHRAE Technology Award Competition | Honorable Mention for the 2017-2018 society year. This historic  timber-framed structure dates back to the 1860s, and sits on the federally listed Cowell Lime Works Historic District, a 30-acre parcel of land at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The structure was dismantled and reconstructed over a new foundation, re-using as much of the original materials as possible. The barn was constructed by hand using the art of mortise and tenon joinery with wooden pegs, an uncommon technique in California.

Integral Group provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services as well as LEED documentation and commissioning.

The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building design in the areas of occupant comfort, indoor air quality and energy conservation. Their designs incorporate ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and IAQ. Performance is proven through one year’s actual, verifiable operating data.

This project was also recognized winner of the 2017 California Preservation Award, SCUP (Society for College and University Planning) 2017 Merit Awards for Excellence in Architecture for Building Additions or Adaptive Reuse, and 2017 AIA East Bay Design Award.
