Deakin University Law School Building

Deakin Learning Common

Deakin University Law School Building is a new 20,000m2, state-of-the-art learning and teaching facility located at the Burwood Campus delivering nine levels of flexible space for active learning, health and wellbeing, student support, and staff accommodation.

A key design driver for this project is to provide the flexibility to accommodate a variety of teaching, research, and administrative functions for the university. Alternative configurations were tested for a typical floor to ensure that the services infrastructure could easily provide different functions in the future with minimal impact on overall building operation.

Tested configurations included open-plan workspace, large meeting rooms, tutorial spaces for up to 128-person occupancy, and specialist functions for postgraduate students. Central air conditioning systems and lighting and power systems were optimized for each of these functions with local modification only on the floor.

The Deakin University Law School Building is designed with a focus on ecologically sustainable development initiatives and innovative design, including rainwater harvesting and groundwater storage, highly efficient HVAC, and wellness facilities.
