Gloucestershire Royal Hospital | Women’s Services Redevelopment

This new build facility includes a 46 bed obstetric in-patient ward; obstetric theatres and delivery rooms (including three HDU rooms); a midwifery-led delivery unit; a neonatal unit including ten intensive care cots and four isolation cots, and a range of consulting rooms, outpatients facilities and specialist scanning facilities.

Our work on this project included: mechanical and electrical services including heating, hot and cold water, air conditioning, ventilation, above ground drainage, electrical power, lighting and data, fire alarms, medical gases and security. The design development process involved working with users and the Trust’s public liaison group, to address issues around the provision of facilities and services.

Close working with the project team and understanding of current regulations has enabled the introduction of sustainable elements such as optimising natural ventilation, daylight dimming in the office areas, variable speed drives on pumps and fans heat recovery on AHU in order to reduce capital and operational costs. The building was thermally modelled in order to assess the impact of temperatures in the space and for part L compliance requirements.

The new building is positioned adjacent to the main hospital campus energy centre and careful assessment and diversion of the main service tunnels had to be undertaken before the building could be constructed.

Working closely with the client and the PSCP via the NEC form of contract allowed a clear focus on what was required by the Foundation Trust to provide the clinical functionality of the new Woman’s Services Redevelopment to serve the needs of the Gloucestershire population.
