UC Berkeley Global Campus at Richmond Bay Infrastructure Master Plan

The Berkeley Global Campus is located on UC Berkeley-administered property fronting the San Francisco Bay in the South Shoreline Area of the City of Richmond, currently serving as the Richmond Field Station. Historically, this area has been the site of a variety of manufacturing and industrial uses, as well as testing and research labs. The site is quite favorable with a very mild climate, a beautiful natural setting on the edge of the bay, and with a deep history of world class research at the Richmond Field Station by UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.

The Berkeley Global Campus development represents a unique opportunity for UC Berkeley to demonstrate its leadership, its serious commitment to sustainability, and to create a transformational and state-of-the-art public / private research center.

The design for this new campus will meet or exceed the University of California Office of the President’s (UCOP) goal for carbon-neutrality by the year 2025 and the UC Berkeley sustainability initiatives.

Serving as a living classroom and lab demonstrating state-of-the-art energy and water strategies and technologies, the Global Campus intends to respond to the market and be attractive for a variety of private investments that complement UC’s investment strategy.

Integral Group developed the Infrastructure Master Plan to define the energy, renewable energy, water, wastewater, fire protection, and telecommunications systems based on the Long Range Development plan approved in 2014. We benchmarked future buildings for high performance and zero-net energy, integrated photovoltaics, energy storage, a combined thermal ambient/fire loop, biological wastewater treatment, zero net water strategies, and several high performance building technologies. This project will be phased and delivered through public-private partnerships.
